Absurd comedy from a legendary filmmaker and no, before anyone asks, absurd not in a good sense.
Howard Hawks completely misses the mark in this 1964 film starred by Rock Hudson and Paula Prentiss, that the director intended as a remake/homage to his 1938 classic Bringing Up Baby.
Sadly enough, Rock Hudson is no Cary Grant and Paula Prentiss is no Katharine Hepburn. Even though Hudson manages to pass well enough in some scenes where he is alone, from Paula Prentiss’ performance on the other hand I don’t really know what to take… I don’t really know if they pretended for her character to be perceived as cute, goofy or whatever with her craziness and exuberance but to me it only was utterly annoying throughout the film. But all in all, weak performances from both leads.
From the rest of performances maybe the supporting cast (especially John McGiver as Hudson’s boss, and Roscoe Karns and Forrest Lewis as the two competing fishermen) raise up a bit the bar and make the film slightly enjoyable.
Otherwise, we find ourselves with a completely idiotic and non-sensical script, where the love story that goes throughout the movie is not believable at all.
At the same time, the various gags and sketches are rather disappointing. Except for maybe some of the aforementioned moments where Hudson might be struggling in performing certain activities or the supporting cast is involved, which they might take slight smile or chuckle out of you.
In conclusion, the weakest Hawks’ film that I have seen up to this date and one that I wouldn’t recommend. But well… If you give it a chance, who knows, it might be down your alley, it just wasn’t down of mine.
