It is a bad sign when, already within the first act, a film jumps randomly between genres, from action‑comedy to action‑drama to rom‑com. This reveals a glaring lack of clarity and conviction about what the filmmaker is trying to achieve and what mood the movie wants to convey to the audience.
Beyond that, the focus is far too heavily placed on the idiotic shenanigans of the supposedly intelligent Jeffrey Manchester, the real‑life‑inspired character played by Channing Tatum, rather than on his underused but genuinely solid chemistry with Kirsten Dunst’s Leigh Wainscott. Equally overlooked is the “Office Space‑like” comedic potential of the Toys “R” Us staff, especially the dynamic between Peter Dinklage (store manager Mitch) and Emory Cohen (Otis). Instead, we waste time watching Tatum fool around the store and observing the mechanics of his makeshift living arrangements.
But truth be told, it is hard to imagine the film being much better even if it had stripped away this cheap comedy to rely more on script and dialogue, which are themselves thin and conventional, or if it had doubled down on its action sequences, which also feel routine and largely unentertaining.
