While its twist is certainly unexpected and enjoyable, the broader plot and the mystery surrounding the film are muddled and unengaging, which forces the reveal to be delivered in a rushed and rather ridiculous way.
In principle, the setting of the retirement home/asylum, the mysterious staff, the odd residents, and the secret of the second floor should provide more than enough material to create an unsettling backdrop for our main character, Max (Pete Davidson), as he tries to uncover what is really going on. Instead, it is quite disappointing that all of this becomes little more than an excuse for James DeMonaco to attempt a cheap atmosphere of creepiness punctuated by sporadic jump scares.
The graphic effects used for the violence, along with some intentionally disturbing moments, are admittedly entertaining. However, when they should be at their most impactful (in the climactic, full‑throttle finale) the excessive, over‑cut editing drains much of the excitement. This is compounded by the stoically dull acting, especially from Pete Davidson, while the rest of the cast can at least be partially excused by the plot itself.
