While having our protagonist (Daisy Ridley) charge headfirst into the zombie apocalypse rather than trying to escape or shield herself from it offers a fresh perspective on the genre, the truth is that the film does not give you much beyond that.

The initial world‑building around the catastrophe and the role that “the living” play in it is genuinely interesting, but as the story progresses and we follow Ava (Ridley’s character) across Tasmania in her search for her husband, the film deflates heavily. It slips into a second act that aims to unsettle but never quite succeeds, and it ends with a ridiculous third act that fails to deliver any emotional payoff or satisfaction.

One small, noteworthy element is the character of Clay (played by Brenton Thwaites), a fellow “living” who sporadically becomes Ava’s sidekick and “motorcycle Uber rider”. He is not exactly a highlight; his personality is thoroughly clichéd, but I must admit he can be funny at times.
